NARRATIVE BASED VIDEOS
A narrative based video tells a story that typically follow the lyrics or relates to the lyrics. This engages the audience to the video as they continuously watch whats going to happen next. The video could be a illustration of the lyrics (the story follows the lyrics), an amplification of the lyrics (the story is based of certain lyrics, but could also show other themes) or a disjuncture where the narrative and the lyrics do not link.
J.Coles 'She Knows' Video shows a young boys day from beginning to end. He skips school with his friend and after a while goes home where he catches his mum cheating on his dad, he then returns to school to be picked up by his dad and they all have dinner together. This is an example of an amplificated narrative as its about a mother cheating whilst the lyrics speak about him cheating and his partner knowing.
PERFORMANCE BASED VIDEOS
A performance based video usually involves the artist performing and singing the lyrics. The videos usually use a variety of different locations and outfits which reflect the atmosphere of the song. Various camera angles, movements and shots are also used in performance based videos which also help to reflect the atmosphere of the song, as well as helping to establish the artists identity, for example Rihanna's outfits and body movements in DJ Khaleds video for 'Wild Thoughts' are highlighted through close ups and full body shots. This presents her outgoing personality and her unique style which she is known for. This video (like most performance based videos) shows the artists performing the lyrics in various different outfits and locations, many of these locations being at a party as it is a party anthem.
Performance based videos are very common convention in the rock genre where the artist/band will perform the lyrics on stage in front of the audience.
CONCEPT BASED VIDEOS
A concept based video is usually based around one unique idea or concept, which typically doesn't have any relation to the lyrics the song. The unique concept is usually what helps to attract audience to the song. Concept based videos can be thematic(based on a theme) or symbolic(symbols throughout the video create a certain meaning).
Sia's video for 'Elastic Heart' shows a man and a girl inside a cage and in my opinion this presents them as caged animals. This is shown though their appearance e.g. the dirt on their bodies and their body movements e.g. when he attracts the girl by putting his hand out and she smells it (how you attract animals) and when she bites his finger. This has nothing to do with the lyrics and is an example of a thematic concept based video. However concept videos can be interpreted in different ways by different people.
