Code Camps

longer format (2-4 weeks)

  • More holistic interaction (coworking, presenting, cooking, hiking, peer programming, focus group, project reviews, ...)

  • Mixed communities (different perspectives, age groups, cultures, stack, bubbles)

  • Lasting connections (new friends, collaborators, contractors...)

PROS

  • Not affordable to everyone (travelling to another country and staying there for a month is not cheap)

  • More involved (more works with planning, recording/streaming talks to engage those who couldn't join...)

  • Only once a year (less interaction during the year)

CONS

  • Prepare the website and announce the code camp
  • Notify the community
  • Form 1 (selecting 2-3 countries and dates to vote on)
  • Form 2 (gathering first applications)
  • Searching for accomodation options
  • Sharing probable costs
  • IF pay-as-you-go options (this step can be skipped) ELSE create invoices with probable costs
  • Book the place
  • Prepare document with core info (options and prices to get there, what to pack, who is coming when...)

Planning - before event

  • Prepare methods/materials for collective planning of talks/activities/cooking/cleaning
  • Plan approx. budget for the food, organize shopping and make sure we stay within the budget
  • Find things to do in the vicinity
  • Communicate with the owner of the place and report damages
  • Keep the house clean (change bedding if different people re-use the beds, wash hand towels, swipe the kitchen floor...)

Planning - during event

  • Prepare final calculation
  • collect more $$ or reimburse if we are over the budget
  • edit and publish the videos
  • update the webpage with links to videos
  • prepare a shared photos dump
  • publish the know-how
  • thank everyone and yourself for making it happen

Planning - post event

What's next

Make a system for collecting knowledge and skills and sharing them with each other regularly, not just during the camps.

P2P workshops

Everyone can create a workshop and link it to other workshops in same or related topic

Work-in-progress

All free and volunteering work for almost 10 years. Next steps will develop as-we-go and are based on the experiences we make along the way.
