A PROPOSAL FOR INSTORE MUSIC STRATEGY & PARTNERSHIP

Outsound × Kollekt.FM for Cubitts

The sound is ...

The Tech is

OutSound is the music strategy layer — The brief, the curation, the cultural intelligence and the quarterly review that keeps the sound consistent and future proofed. Matthew previously working with Harrods, Burberry and Jo Malone among others.

Kollekt.FM is the technology infrastructure — trusted by Ace & Tate, Lynk & Co, Hotel V, TrainMore and Emma Sleep among others across thousands of locations. The Atmosphere Player, the Backstage platform, the licensing compliance and the delivery architecture that makes the music play correctly across every location, every day, without intervention.

The collaborative partnership

Good frames are not made by one person. Neither is a good sound strategy.

This is a three-way collaboration. Cubitts brings the brand identity and the spaces. OutSound brings the strategy and the curation. Kollekt.FM brings the technology and the infrastructure.

Each does what it does best and nothing else. Accountability to keep people listening.

Outsound × Kollekt.FM for Cubitts

The objective. The Cubitts sound should be as considered as everything else in the store.

The frame is designed. The spatial environment is considered. The customer experience is intentional. The music should be no different — built from a written brief, delivered consistently across every location and updated with the same rigor applied to every other element of the brand.

Consistent sound across every Cubitts location. Minimal staff interaction: a system runs itself, removing the risk of personal taste replacing the brand sound. No random choices. No gaps. The music the brief intended, playing as it should, every day.

Sound reimagined as part of the brand experience, not background, but a considered layer of what it means to be in a Cubitts space. The same identity that runs through the frames, the stores, and Spectacle magazine now carries through sound.

The commercial case for investing in sound

Retail marketing budgets increasingly go toward channels that can prove a return — paid social, CRM, email — while the one channel that plays in every store, every day, all year is treated as decoration. That's the gap this proposal closes.

Sound is the only part of the in-store experience that is always on, reaches 100% of footfall, and — with the engagement architecture built into this programme — is now measurable in the same terms as any other marketing channel: logged scans, Spotify follows, and a direct line into Spectacle and social.

Why now: Cubitts is expanding into new cities, including New York, over the next six weeks. That means the sound identity either scales deliberately, store by store, or drifts — exactly when consistency matters most.

Why OutSound: This isn't a playlist service. It's a strategist who has built sonic identity at the scale Cubitts is heading toward — Burberry across 422 stores, Harrods' Apple Music for Business partnership — brought in early enough to build the brief once, properly, rather than fix it later across a dozen more stores.

Why Kollekt.FM: The infrastructure carrying this isn't a consumer workaround either. Redundant onboard storage, encrypted connections end-to-end, and automated failover mean the sound keeps running even if a router dies or the internet drops for days — built to the same reliability bar as the rest of Cubitts' retail tech stack, not bolted on as an afterthought.

Cubitts: The Sound of a Modern Spectacle Maker

The sound of Cubitts reflects the brand's ethos — intimate, cinematic in scale but never soft, transcending genre while staying within the brand's aesthetic. The instrumentation draws parallels with materials, paying homage to the design's heritage to reinforce Cubitts' identity through sound.

The music is bespoke, built on a deliberate balance of texture and tone that reflects the brand's structural integrity. It unfolds in an organic flow, moving listeners through a journey of auditory discovery rather than sitting still. Starting with minimal, sparse textures, it gradually builds in vibrancy and resonance as the day progresses, before returning to a state of tranquil simplicity by close.

The sound is ...

The sound is not ...

Cerebral - Music that rewards close attention. Unhurried. Precise. The kind of sound that makes the room feel considered.

Architecturally precise - Harmonically coherent. Tracks that move in the same tonal direction — not a random playlist but a composed environment.

Understated - Low energy. Highly acoustic. The music works below conscious awareness — felt before it is noticed.

Vibey - Tom was specific. The shop floor should not feel like a bar or a café. The music is ambient, not atmospheric filler.

Non Generic Erykah Badu, Eza Collective, Lemongrass — flagged directly. Warmth for warmth's sake is not the brief.

Chillout - Smooth, polished, interchangeable background. The Cubitts sound is none of those things.

The Brief

Outsound × Kollekt.FM for Cubitts

What this is: A bespoke sound programme built specifically for Cubitts — not a generic retail playlist.

What it's doing: Shifting automatically through the day, sparser and more restrained in the morning, building energy into the afternoon, so the room always sounds considered without anyone touching a dial.

Why it matters: The sound is part of the brand experience, just like the frames and the fit-out. Get it right, and customers feel it without noticing it; get it wrong, and it undercuts everything else in the room.

The brief in one line: Cerebral, precise, and considered — never a vibe. If it could be mistaken for a café or bar playlist, it's wrong.

The Sound of a Modern Spectacle Maker

SAMPLE PLAYLIST ONE

01 . Refined & Sparse

The Cubitts sound is cerebral, unhurried and architecturally precise — the way a well-made frame rewards close attention. Purely instrumental. No beats or melodies that compete. No warmth for warmth's sake.

The register runs from ambient neo-classical — Arvo Pärt, Max Richter, Brian Eno — through to post-minimalism in the Rival Consoles register. Floating Points. Nala Sinephro. When it goes older, it embraces truly old — Getatchew Mekurya, not a contemporary version of an older style.

02 . Refined & Sparse - Vocal

The same cerebral, unhurried register — with a subtle addition of vocals that add texture, never distraction. Atmospheric and understated. Never lyric-led.

Post-minimalism and modern classical in the Floating Points and Alabaster DePlume register. When it gets older, it embraces true age. No soul. No warmth for warmth's sake.

03 . Bright & Vibrant

Energy without obviousness. Guitar-led, cinematic, and warm — the playlist lifts the room through rhythm and texture rather than melody or vocals. Builds naturally from the Refined & Sparse morning into the afternoon. Contemporary and culturally credible without being trend-chasing. The 80–120 BPM arc moves customers through the store without overpowering the experience or losing the Cubitts register.

Sound Engagement

Sound Engagement

Every Cubitts location runs from one dashboard. Each store is set up once, with its playlists and schedule assigned centrally — no manual changes needed from store to store. Playlists shift automatically through the day: brighter and more energetic in the morning, calmer and more refined by evening. Store teams don't touch it. OutSound and Kollekt.FM manage the programme; the store just plays it.

Music programme, scheduling and location management

Outsound × Kollekt.FM for Cubitts

In-store sound doesn't have to end at the till. Every playlist is a content and acquisition channel in its own right — built around four stages: curation, activation, engagement, discovery. A QR code turns a passive in-store moment into a logged, attributable touchpoint: every scan is a trackable event, not an assumption. From there, the customer is routed into owned channels — Spotify (followers, saves), cubitts.com and social (embeds, shareable content), and Spectacle magazine (print-to-digital handoff). Each scan builds the owned audience and gives a real, reportable number behind a channel that currently produces none. It turns music from a cost center into a measurable part of the marketing funnel.

Quarterly reporting includes scan volume by location, Spotify follower and save growth, and click-through to owned channels, giving marketing a real number behind a previously unmeasured channel.

The quarterly review answers the one question that has never been asked before — whether it is actually working.

All OutSound fees are invoiced independently from Kollekt.FM. Two specialists.

The Mechanics Behind the Sound

The Atmosphere Player runs 24/7, automated and hands-off. Staff do not touch it. Although multiple playlists are available, staff can switch between them; all music scheduling is bespoke to each store. The music plays, transitions, and schedules itself, removing the risk of personal taste undermining the brand sound across any location.

Full Sonos integration bypasses the app entirely, keeping the Cubitts sound consistent across all stores without manual intervention. One device. Local storage that keeps the music playing even when the internet drops.

The same sound. Every location. Every day.

The technology behind the Cubitts sound works the way the best frames do — without drawing attention to itself.

Following a full technical assessment across selected Cubitts stores, the trial was live within minutes — a simple download and login, no installation, no technical knowledge, no support required (but always on hand if needed)

The Mechanics Behind the Sound

The software route — for stores that already have a device wired into their sound system. Install OutSound's program directly on an iPad, tablet, computer, or any existing networked device, and it will play the Cubitts sound automatically. No separate hardware required.

Works through whatever a store already has — no new hardware to source or fit

Staff remotely, can see what's playing and switch playlists in real time

The right fit for flexible sites, shorter leases, or as a fast way to launch before a permanent install

Playback depends on that device staying powered, connected and undisturbed

The Player App

The Mechanics Behind the Sound

The hardware route — a dedicated appliance for stores that want the sound running with nothing to manage at all. It plugs directly into the amplifier or speakers, requires no app, login, or device, and keeps playing from local storage even if the internet drops.

Purpose-built appliance — connects straight into the store's existing amp or speakers via RCA

Fully automated 24/7; nothing for staff to open, log into or press play on

Local storage keeps the sound running for days through an internet outage

Drives up to two zones out of the box, more via USB audio interfaces — one device covers multi-room stores

The most tamper-proof option: removes the risk of a staff device being logged out, repurposed or switched off

Optional - hardwired box

Sound in Focus

Sound in Focus

Outsound × Kollekt.FM for Cubitts

The process is simple and sits entirely with OutSound and Kollekt.FM. OutSound curates the sound for each space, and Cubitts signs it off. Once the contract is signed, Kollekt.FM installs the hardware and app in-store. Stores get one short brief — there's nothing for teams to set up or maintain.

We start in London, where all 13 stores go live as the pilot. Manchester, Leeds, Edinburgh, Cambridge and Brighton follow over the next month, one store each. New York — two stores — completes the rollout at week six.

Behind the scenes, we build the engagement architecture that turns each track into a measurable moment: Spotify brand page, QR placement at every location, playlist linking and tracking, Spectacle magazine integration, and social guidance. Every scan is a logged, reportable event.
