New Media Technologies in my Evaluation

Web 2.0

Tim O'Reilly coined the term Web 2.0; which describes user friendly websites that enables users to generate their own content. Web interfaces can be shared and accessed on different media platforms. This means that non-expert users such as myself can use the software easily and can share my content online for you to view.

Proliferation of web 2.0 in the last 10 years has led to the creation of social media sites. There are millions of interconnected networks which can be accessed by billions of people all over the world.  This converges to Tim Berners-Lee's original vision of the Web as
"a collaborate medium"

I used Wikipedia to research subjects that I was not well versed in.

This enabled me to learn about important aspects such as age demographics.

Google is a form of cross media convergence as it links to various websites such as Youtube or Wikipedia. I used Google to look up images of artists that I needed to compile for visual presentation.

I used Nielsen and Ofcom for vital stats on music consumption and to find tables and graphs that represented this data

I used gifs to produce a moving visual from a music video. It is vital that I only select the parts that are relevant to my point and so showing the entire music video is not the best way to express an opinion that I have.

I used youtube to upload videos that I have made, whether it was a screen capture or a movie video. I also used Youtube commentary to make annotations to my video in order to add context or analysis.

Slid.es is essentially an online version of powerpoint presentation. It uses cloud technology so that everything is saved on its servers and it can even be used on tablets and smartphone devices.

I have used slid.es before on numerous occasions and I am very confident in creating slideshows on this software.

Pros:

-Extremely easy to use

-Compatible with gifs

-Can embed easily onto blogger

-Revision history means that mistakes can be easily undone

-Can be edited after embedding

Cons:

-Cannot embed Youtube videos, hyperlinks

-Is not visually engaging

-Creatively limiting

Prezi is a visual presentation software that is engaging and interactive due to its zoomable canvas.

I love that there are endless possibilities when it comes to how I can present my ideas. However, it demands a great attention to detail which I may not have the time to perfect.

Pros:

-Visually engaging and stimulating

-Is very interactive

-Can embed easily onto blogger

-Existing templates save time

Cons:

-Is not compatible with gifs

-Viewer can zoom out too far

-Tricky and finicky to perfect

-Time consuming to create

Emaze is similar to both Slid.es and Prezi and utilises the best aspects of both. It is a cloud based slideshow presentation that also makes use of 3D zooms and video backgrounds. It even enables you to convert an existing powerpoint presentation into an emaze presentation.

With emaze, I was able to produce high quality presentations that were interactive and engaging. I was surprised to learn that I could even embed a slideshow from slid.es onto emaze.

I personally really like emaze and I would have used it more if I had discovered it earlier.

Pros:

-Very easy to use

-HTML technology allows addition of gifs, media and hyperlinks

-Changes made after embedding are still valid

-Can embed easily onto blogger

Cons:

-So many creative templates mean I spend too much time choosing my template
