Web Hosting - What Should You Notice?

There is a temptation to see the web hosting comments, see a few negative items associated with a particular host, and dismiss them but this could be a mistake. When reading VPS hosting comments it is useful to keep in mind the following:

  • The services provided by the different hosting company. There is no point in complaining about the lack of support for certain technologies if it was never promised in the first place.
  • Users generally will complain more easily than they would praise so it would be surprising if there were no negative web hosting comments about the hosts.
  • The bigger the company hosting more negative comments that you would expect to see.
  • Many web hosting that negative comments will not be required if the users have read the Terms of Service (although some hosts could make the key terms that more clearly on their website).

When looking at web hosting comments about the large hosting company I was impressed with how much about financial matters, contracts, and support rather than technical issues. It can:

Cancellation: Sometimes there are procedures to follow are set out in KL. Not following this results in delays.

Domain names (and cancellation): When a domain name is included in the package must be paid if you cancel, even under a money-back guarantee. This is spelled out in TOS but the website can only say that the money-back guarantee associated with hosting costs and the implications of this is lost on some users. Failure to obtain a full refund produces more upset some web hosting comments.

Extension: Most hosts issued coupon/offer discounts but this applies to new customers only. Renewal of the standard rate host, some sites do not make this clear.

The definition of "Unlimited": Most hosts offer unlimited bandwidth, storage, databases, etc but while it certainly can not be taken literally, the definition of "Unlimited" is not clear. Limited use does not keep things simple and hosting companies know that most users will only use a small number of resources. But we are talking about shared hosting so if it gets busy sites can not be allowed to take resources to the detriment of other users. At this point, you have to rely on the hosting company to handle it enough. Users only in this position will see the hosts as unreasonable and probably will post negative web hosting comments.

Backup: Hosting companies usually states that the backup is the responsibility of the user. While they do generally periodic backup their servers together they do not accept responsibility for missing data (not unreasonable given the low-cost hosting). Anyone can suffer a hardware failure so that you can get lucky with any host.

To ensure you do not end up writing web hosting negative comments I recommend reading the TOS of your host thoroughly and take regular backups of your own. Before buying Hosting, read WPOven Reviews.
