Dash Units
Changing Dash Units for Mainstream Adoption
Problem
Dash's "street" unit (i.e. DASH) is not suited for use as a currency
Problem?
- Is this a problem now? In the future?
- What is dash aiming for?
- Be a better payment processor?
- Be a better money / currency?
- Do we suppress, or promote units?
- Perceive purchasing power increase
Problem: psychological
- Dash feels expensive to buy
-
People feel they own little
Problem: technical
- Existing software uses 100 subunits
Problem: practical
- Difficult to grasp how much you paid
- 0.008194 is just a meaningless number
- Awkward:
- "123 thousandths of a dash"
- "point 123 dash"
- Natural
- "123 thousand dash"
Solution
Redefine the street unit
Solution: possibilities
- Scientific units (e.g. μDASH)
- New names (e.g. "dots")
- Hide the units
- Hope for the best
- Re-denomination
Solution: re-denomination
- Now: 1 DASH = 100,000,000 DUFF
- Option: 1 DASH = 100,000 DUFF
- Proposed: 1 DASH = 100 DUFF
Costs & Benefits
Will cost time & money...
but it will accelerate adoption,
which will lead to higher dash price
Benefits
- whole numbers > than decimal units
- no complex naming conventions
- compatible with financial software
- aware of purchasing power increases
- show agility of dash governance
Costs
- core & 3rd party software updates
- exchanges, MN services, wallets
- libraries & tools
- documentation updates
- community education
Final Thoughts
- Better now than later
