What is the purpose of citation?

  • Engage in scholarly conversation

  • Relate your own ideas and analysis to existing scholarship

  • Give credit to authors whose ideas you use

  • Allow your reader to find the original article

Example: Chicago Style

  • Read through the excerpt

  • Note which citations are direct quotes and which are paraphrase

Practice: Chicago Style

  • Read through the article excerpt

  • Create 2 examples each of how to incorporate sources through paraphrase and direct quotations

    • Write sentences that incorporate the source, along with appropriate signal words or phrases

  • At the end, create a complete bibliographic entry for the article
