Critital Review & Analysis
... This review requires you to choose one of the recommended texts and choose a chapter to analyze. In addition, a current (2015-2025) scientific research article from a reputable peer-reviewed Journal (see suggested list at end of syllabus), or from the references the author used in the chapter, or from critiques by other authors that relate to the topic of the chapter.
You will summarize this chapter and the article and critique them, comparing and contrasting the chosen material to discussions in the text or the lectures.
.. include a complete reference of the chapter and associated research article, plus any supportive references used.
**Note: The most challenging part of this assignment will be finding a current, scientific, peer-reviewed research article that can connect with the ideas in the text chapter you choose.**
From your assignment description:
How are you going to access your recommended text?
Your recommended texts:
-
Use Sofia or login to your ANTH 203 COURSE RESERVES to find the recommended books listed in your assignment description.
-
Read the table of contents of each book and identify potential chapters* of interest.
-
++Search for research articles on related topics++ [see next slides]
-
You will find the print books in the Webster Library Course Reserves Room. You'll need the book's call number to locate it on the shelf.
It's a good idea to read both the introduction of the book you are interested in, as well as chapter you are considering
- Scan the chapter* you need.
*except for the books to be read and reviewed in their entirety

what is a scientific research article?
see this guide:
what is a reputable peer-reviewed journal?
Though there are many help guides and videos describing what a peer reviewed journal is, deciding on what is reputable can be more tricky. Your list provides examples!
- DO coordinate: ensure you can find a research article that relates to the topic of your chosen chapter BEFORE finalizing your chapter choice.
- DO stay flexible. Be prepared to choose a different topic/chapter if needed
RESEARCH ARTICLES:
- DO pick research articles that describe their study methodology
- DO pick articles labeled as Research or Original Articles ( though this not enough on its own)
- DO pick articles with substantial bibliographies (also not enough on its own)
- DO give yourself lots of time... it will most likely take several tries to find a research article that matches your chosen topic/chapter and that is appropriate.
Finding a scientific research article
dos & don'ts: DO
- DON'T pick a book review, editorial or column
- DON'T pick a review article (though you can use these kinds of articles to improve your analysis, or to find a good RESEARCH article in the bibliography)
- DON'T pick an article that is shorter than 10 pages
- DON'T pick an article that does NOT have a long bibliography
- DON'T pick an article published before 2015
- DON'T pick an article and chapter that are not relevant to course content
- DON'T rigidly stick to your first chosen topic
- DON'T be surprised if you don't immediately understand all of the content in the articles you choose.
Finding a scientific research article

TWO MORE EXAMPLES:
appropriate research article?
APPROPRIATE ARTICLE?
Though the title is not immediately easy to understand, this article could be reviewed and critiqued for your assignment. It looks at epigenetics and phenotype environment and tries to make a link with migration, and you could do more research on those topics to better understand the research and findings. Note however that the article is from 2013, so could not be used for your assignment this year!
APPROPRIATE ARTICLE?
Though the editors called this an original research article, it is reviewing literature and others' research, not reporting on the authors' own research
