You will summarize this article and critique it, comparing and contrasting it to discussions in the text or the lectures.

You will need to include a complete reference of the article, and of any other additional supportive references used.

what is a reputable peer-reviewed journal?

Though there are many help guides and videos describing what a peer reviewed journal is, deciding on what is reputable can be more tricky. If in doubt, use your list!

  • DO try to pick a topic which you understood well in class. BUT:
remain flexible and be prepared to switch/adjust topics if needed
  • DO pick articles with substantial bibliographies (though this alone won't always work)
  • DO pick articles labeled as Research or Original Articles (this alone won't always work)
  • DO pick research articles that describe their methodology
  • DO give yourself lots of time... it will most likely take several tries to find an article that works

Finding a scientific research article

dos & don'ts: DO

  • DON'T pick a book review, editorial or column
  • DON'T pick a review article (though you can use these kinds of articles to improve your analysis, or to find a good RESEARCH article in the bibliography)
  • DON'T pick an article that is shorter than 10 pages
  • DON'T pick an article that does not have a long bibliography
  • DON'T pick an article published before 2013
  • DON'T pick an in article of interest that is not relevant to course content
  • DON'T rigidly stick to your first chosen topic
  • DON'T be surprised if you don't immediately understand all of the content in the articles you choose.

Finding a scientific research article

dos & don'ts: DON'T

APPROPRIATE  ARTICLE?

Though the title is not immediately easy to understand, this article could be reviewed and critiqued for your assignment. It looks at epigenetics and phenotype environment and tries to make a link with migration, and you could do more research on those topics to better understand the research and findings.

APPROPRIATE  ARTICLE?

Though the editors called this an original research article, it is reviewing literature and others' research, not reporting on the authors' own research
