The duties of the captains vary some what depending on the type of ship they command for example, there are boat captains, ferry captains, tugboat captains and rental boat captains.

However, all captains typically command the ships crew and determine the speed of the ship, set the course of the trip, use depth measuring equipment, calculate the position of the ship, doc and unlock ships, and use cards, compasses and area plot sheets.

Difference between captain and master

In contemporary use not much but historic ally titles represented very different roles. The captain is more common in modern use, but master is more accurate historically.
