TATTOO STEREOTYPING IS WRONG
What are some tattoo stereotypes?
- Criminal related
- Trashy
- Embarrassing to be around or associated with
History of tattoos
- As early as 4000bc
- the Japenese used tattoos for religious and even to mark criminals
- in the 1700s Captain James Cook traveled to Tahitia and observed the natives' skin marking customs and wrote about them in his book "The Voyage in H.M. Bark Endeavor"
When did this stereotype start?
-If you think about it they have always been looked down upon
-Not really acceptable in most cultures
-Not acceptable in most places of work
Media influences
- Always depicts criminals with tattoo
- Never talks about positive things people do who have tattoos
- everybody would rather hear negativity in the media vs something positive
Why is tattoo stereotyping wrong?
-Its judgemental
-Could be missing out on a great relationship
-could miss out on a great asset to your company
This stereotype continues to be followed today. It encourages people to conform to a certain way that they must follow in order to be accepted and it portrays the image that you must look a certain way in order to be successful
What should you do?
-Not pass judgement when you first see them
-If you are an employer give them a chance
-Talk to them and learn their story about their tattoos
Everybody with tattoos are not trashy or criminal related. Stereotyping these individuals is wrong. you are limiting their chances at being successful in life and you could very well be missing out on a great friendship or relationship when you pass judgement on someone before getting to know them
