HIPPOCAMPUS

A Presentation by Ian Schuepbach

Hippocampus Anatomy

The word hippocampus means seahorse in greek.

It is curved in shape, and is located in the middle of the temporal lobe.

Hippocampus Function

The hippocampus is part of the brain’s limbic system, it helps control emotion.

It helps orient yourself in space.

It stores long term memory.

It uses these functions to connect memories, emotions and senses in order to stitch all the core functions of the brain together.

Alzheimer's

The hippocampus is one of the first parts of the brain affected by DBD

Hippocampus Research

Although general functions seems to be well documented, the exact function of the hippocampus is unknown.

Researchers have speculated that it could possibly relate to: reflexes, smell, sexuality, immunity, and more.

Alzheimer's in Culture

In 1983, President Ronald Reagan designated November as National Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. Reagan himself would later succumb to the disease, but Alzheimer’s Awareness Month continues.

Other celebrities like Glen Campbell and Rita Hayworth have heightened understanding of the illness and reduce the stigma of Alzheimer’s patients by publicly announcing their own illnesses.

Alzheimer's Research

In early 2016 researchers found that your own immune system may trigger DBD

In late 2016

one of the first successful treatments for DBD was discovered
