2016 Global Health Case Competition

Realizing Gender Equality in Guatemala

GHCC @ UVA

The UVA Global Health Case Competition aims to inspire creativity and innovation in addressing complex and relevant global health challenges.  When the 24 student teams present their final recommendations on competition day, Saturday, January 30, they will have had 4 days to engage with the case and the opportunity to vet ideas with an academic or professional with relevant insight.

The case describes the Female Equity Initiative, a fictionalized NGO headquartered in a small southwestern Guatemalan municipality. The case competitors are asked to design new strategies to enhance gender equality in the region. The case was  developed in collaboration with a UVA Law School alumna and previous CGH Scholar, Kate Flatley. Ms. Flatley will be Skyping in to deliver the competition welcome address from her office in Guatemala, where she heads a leading NGO that seeks to empower Guatemalan women.

GHCC Case

The case has deliberately been designed to be complex and gives teams a vast range of problems to choose from and prioritize. The 13 faculty judges and 14 UVA-affiliated mentors expect teams to prioritize strategies and to justify their choices during their presentation. The case analysis, inter-disciplinary collaboration, and formal persuasive presentation are all important activities to help train global health leaders for the future. We welcome the public to learn more about the struggle for gender equality in Guatemala and to cheer on the teams. The winning team will represent UVa at the national Global Health Case Competition held at Emory University in Atlanta.

Team "Salud es la Virtud" will be attending the Emory International Global Health Case Competition on April 9-10.
Congratulations!
