Health is a universal value which intersects multiple disciplines including development studies, the humanities, engineering, medicine, nursing, architecture and law.

Reasons for admission to ICU and prognosis at Kigali teaching hospital in Rwanda (Providence UWAMALIYA). Knowing the reasons for ICU admission is very important in planning capacity and facilities. In this study students will review charts from previous ICU patients to determine the details of admission reasons and outcomes.

Risk factors and outcomes in ICU patients with ventilator-associated pneumonia (Vestine DUSHIMIMANA): This study will investigate how often pneumonia happens in patients on ventilators, what associated risk factors these patients have, and what their outcomes are. Students will review charts of previous ICU patients to collect this data.

UGHE brings a new approach to recruiting and training health professionals. An initiative of Partners In Health and led by internationally recognized faculty and staff from around the world, UGHE is an independent university that builds on PIH’s three decades of experience in delivering health services to some of the world’s poorest communities.

Our unique focus on practical experience outside the classroom ensures that students understand the complexity of delivering care in all settings.

Perceptions and challenges of medical students during the transition from preclinical to clinical training at UGHE (Daniel SEIFU): In this study we want to assess the perceptions of our students of their preparedness and challenges they may encounter during this transition period. This may include the following areas: professionalism and socialization, workload, patient contact, knowledge and skills, learning and education and expectations of students from clinical faculty.

Early clinical exposure and student readiness for learning and fitness in the clinical setting: Experiences of UGHE medical students transitioning into junior clerkships (Robert OJIAMBO): Rwandan Ministry of Health regulatory provisions do not permit actual patient encounters for preclinical students. For this reason, alternative approaches to early clinical exposure have been designed in the medical education curriculum to include simulated patients using high fidelity mannequins at the state-of-the art UGHE SIM center. Does this approach to ECE contribute to the development of student readiness for learning in the clinical environment? .

Systems-based approach to assess the challenges and impact of team-based learning implementation on basic medical sciences education among medical students at UGHE (Daniel SEIFU): In this study, we intend to assess the impact of TBL on students’ performance, their perceptions of the use of TBL as one of the main instructional strategies, and challenges they faced during this implementation process. Furthermore, we also assess the perceptions of the faculty about TBL, challenges the faculty faced during the implementation process and explore new experiences. Additionally, we also like to assess the perceptions of the administration and expected role in supporting the TBL.

UGHE Research Projects

  1. Analysis of survey data related to global cancer care collaboration between UVA and Nepal teams.  Data set is small (n=22) and clean.  Looking for a student to help run basic analysis and prepare tables etc for publication.  Timeline for completion is this spring semester. Requires basic statistical skillset and familiarity with SPSS analysis software.  Based on contributions, opportunity for publication.

  2. Maintenance of Nepal-UVA Virtual Library website.  This is a more on-going project, so ideally would be someone who could commit to at least a year.  Would involve approximately monthly virtual meetings with the Nepal team members so excellent opportunities for global collaboration.  Student needs to have at least some availability on weekday mornings (to accommodate meeting time zone differences).
