Questions, commands and suggestions

She asked me where I was going.

The teacher asked if I had finished my homework.

She told him to close the door.

He suggested trying the new restaurant.

The engineer warned us not to touch that button.

Close the door!

“We should try that new restaurant,” he said.

“Don’t touch that button,” the engineer warned.

Did you finish your homework?

Where are you going?

Questions

  • We don't use the auxiliary verb DO.
  • They don't need question marks.
  • There is NO QUESTION WORD: remove who, what, how, where, when, etc.
  • Use IF ir WHETHER.
  • There is no inversion of subject and verb.

DS: Why are you late?

RS: He asked her why she was late.

Commands

  • We use to + infinitive or not to + infinitive
  • Told: report stronger commands.
  • Ask: more polite requests.

DS: Don't write on the table!

RS: They told him not to write on the table.

Suggestions

  • We use a GERUND (ing) after suggest.
  • We don't say the person we are talking to.
  • Other verbs and times expressions are reported as usual.

DS: Let’s watch a movie

RS: He suggested watching a movie.
