Injection moulding is a process in which molds made of steel, aluminum or custom tools are used. Half is attached to the injection moulding machine and the other half is allowed to slide out of the mould and open or close the mould along the dividing line.
Injection moulds consist of two halves compressed together to form a cavity in the shape of the part to be produced. High pressure is required to ensure that the plastic resin fills every fork and rim of the cavity. After the hot liquid plastic has cooled down, the two halves of the mould are pulled apart and the part ejected.
Injection moulding offers extended possibilities for the durability and reliability of the manufactured plastic parts, unlike most other production methods.
Injection molding is used to manufacture many things, such as wires, spools, packaging, bottle caps, auto parts and components, toys, bags and combs, musical instrument parts, one-piece chairs, small tables, storage containers, mechanical parts (including transmissions) and most other plastic products that are currently available today.
Plastic injection molding is one of the fastest production processes in the world and is suitable for mass production.
Injection moulding is the most common method for the production of large-volume plastic parts. While 3D printing technology is often used to prototype plastic parts, injection molding technology is also used in manufacturing. Costs are a driver of why injection molding is used in the manufacturing process for the manufacture of plastic parts.
