2015 Year Book

President's Report

Across the grades, 2015 was another year of on-field consolidation for our club:

  • The League team finished 6th in the WAAFL’s premier A Grade competition, narrowly missing the finals but proving that we can mix it with the best - the season’s highlight being a pair of home and away wins over the eventual Runners-Up, Wesley Curtin.
  • The Reserves also finished 6th, literally missing their maiden finals appearance by a single kick. This was an outstanding result, with the team rising from second last in 2014 to become a genuine challenger in 2015. Another positive from this group is that 18 of the players who would have qualified for Reserves Finals have earned elevation to the League side at some point - depth is crucial in our competition and we have seen this come along in leaps and bounds, thanks to the coaching and support of Marcus "Disco" Elliott.
  • Our Colts toiled manfully, again in the WAAFL’s premier A Grade competition. The highlight of their season was a 104 point victory over Kelmscott, but for much of the rest of the year the boys battled against clubs with 50-75 more young players to choose from. This is something we are working hard to address.
  • And last but not least, our Thirds were true to their name, finishing 3rd on the ladder, and only narrowly failing to qualify for the Grand Final their best season in many years.

The challenges of running a community-driven amateur football club are significant. As the smallest A Grade club, every week our young men compete against clubs that have twice as many members, three times as many off-field helpers and quadruple the financial resources.

At the beginning of every season our club faces an operating shortfall in excess of $50,000, which we bridge via a combination of fundraising, sponsorship, food & beverage sales and events. We have consistently overcome this hurdle, generating significant annual surpluses through most of the past decade, thanks to the hard work of our committee and volunteers. This strong financial base has enabled West Coast Amateur Football Club to invest more in community facilities than any other club in our competition. This is consistent with our long-term strategy and something that we are very proud of.

In conjunction with the Town of Cambridge, West Coast Junior Football Club and West Coast Sporting Association, we anticipate that these investments, first in the clubroom renovations and, more recently, the new floodlights, will make City Beach Oval a popular destination for young sportspeople for many years to come.

President's Report (cont.)

As a collective, our club supported a number of charities and other community initiatives in 2016. A shining example was the Forever15 charity game, played in memory of a local boy (and friend to a number of our young players) who tragically died of brain cancer aged just 15. We were proud to host the inaugural Forever15 game in October, which helped to raise in excess of $30,000 for the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation, and look forward to continuing our support of this great cause in 2016 and beyond.

While all these achievements are commendable, if there is one thing from 2015 that I would like to draw particular attention to as an example of the culture that we continue to work so hard to develop at West Coast Amateur Football Club, it is that more than 70 of our players volunteered to help in last year’s City To Surf.

When presented with the same opportunity, other local club Presidents have told me that they “can’t find two volunteers to put up a tent, let alone twenty to volunteer on a Sunday morning”. At our club, on the other hand, that the equivalent of 3+ teams of young men (from a club which only fields 4 teams) were willing to give up six hours of their own time late on a Saturday night or early on a Sunday morning to support such an important community event and help raise valuable funds is something that we are especially proud of.

It is things like this that have made my time as Club President so personally rewarding thus far. However, I am mindful my time in the role is finite, and before too long I will be passing the reins to one of our young leaders.

If there is one message that I would hope carries through it is this...

Clubs provide members of the local community with a chance to achieve something, as a group, which is far greater than that which any individual could achieve by themselves.

As club administrators, our role is not to represent the club on-field. Instead, we are responsible for instilling our values across the broader group, nurturing leadership skills in the next generation and helping to develop our members into well-rounded young men and valued members of the community.

Football is simply the vehicle by which we do this.

Thanks again to our players, parents, volunteers, sponsors  and community partners for your continued support.

It is what makes all of this possible, and for that we are sincerely grateful.
