World War 1

A successful film about World War 1 is "War Horse". The story talks about a boy called Albert and his horse called Joey. When the war starts in 1914 in Britain the army buy the horse Joey and take him to France where British and French were fighting. Joey had to work for the army in bad conditions. When Albert is 18 the army recruit him for fight. At the end of the war Albert finds Joey in France and they return to their farm.

This story is typical of a young man who lived between 1914 and 1918.

Britain and France were fighting against Germany after the invasion in Belgium and France.

Both armies protected their positions building trenches; the conditions in the trenches were terrible becouse they were opened so when it was raining or snowing it was a disaster so the soldiers spent weeks in very bad conditions.

In 1914 the government ordered factories to produce arms and guns for the war.

Women had to do the jobs of the man who were fighting but 50 000 young women went to France to work as nurses, drivers or cooks.

In 1916 the government introduced conscription so young men had to fight when they were 18;

mothers had to make sure the children had enough to eat when food rations started in 1917.

There was propaganda too so there were posters in the streets to encourage people to win the war,

but the government censored certain soldiers' letters so people didn't know about the terrible situation in France. It's estimated that 11 millions horses were used on World War 1.
