The OSI Physical Layer is the first layer in the OSI model, responsible for the transmission and reception of unstructured raw bit streams over a physical medium such as a wire, fiber optic cable, or radio frequency. This layer defines the electrical, mechanical, and functional characteristics of the physical interface between two devices, including the physical connectors, pinouts, signaling schemes, and transmission media.
As may be seen from the picture above, raw data enters the physical layer from transmission medium and also leaves the physical layer to transmission medium.
The main functions of the Physical Layer include encoding and decoding of data, modulation and demodulation of signals, transmission and reception of bits, and error detection and correction. The layer also defines the specifications for data transmission rates, bandwidth, distance, and signal-to-noise ratio, which determine the maximum data rate and the quality of the transmission.
Examples of technologies and protocols that operate at the Physical Layer include Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB, HDMI, and RS-232. The Physical Layer is the lowest layer in the OSI model, and its functions are essential for all higher layers to function properly.
