Involvement with LSSTC

Science Collaboration Endorsement of LSST Corporation Activities

The Science Collaborations are committed to continuing to work closely with LSSTC to help guide private funds to programs and activities that have broad scientific value. Click here for the Letter of Endorsement of LSST Corporation by the LSST Science Collaborations.

Involvement with LSSTC large programs

51 candidate mentors thrilled to have the opportunity to join a Catalyst fellow mentoring team and ensure that the fellows can benefit from the supportive scientific environment critically connected with Rubin that the SCs offer

Thank you to the LSSTC for securing financial support for these mentors

designed for rapid and efficient follow up of LSST transients

8-channel imaging spectrograph currently in development for Gemini South.

dynamic queue scheduling software to optimize the planning and execution of all observations as new follow-up targets are triggered during the course of the night.

follow up scheduling will have to include satellite locations

A change of perspective

from rare to statistical samples

Stephen T. Ridgway+ 2014

THE VARIABLE SKY OF DEEP SYNOPTIC SURVEYS

arXiv:1409.3265

Stellar Eruptions: The Giant Eruption of Eta Carinae reached m=1.4, while in an obscured Little Eruption the system reached magnitude 6.2.

  • With the single-band limit of LSST at magnitude 24-25  a Giant or a Little Eruption would be visible in the LMC (distance modulus = 18.5), and
  • a Giant Eruptionin can be detected in the Local Group (distance modulus 24.4).

TVS Roadmap - in preparation

Historical lightcurve ot Eta Carinae (1800s) and  "supernova impostors" Smith & Frew 2011

from rare to statistical samples

  • Galaxy mass and structure of 10^5 lenses
  • Time delay cosmography (lensed QSO, SNe)
  • Galaxy cluster mass and structure: SL+WL constraints on DM in 103 clusters
  • Quasar microlensing: accretion disk structure of 1000 lensed AGN + IMF of lensing galaxies
  • Resolved properties of high-redshift galaxies
  • Lensed explosive transients: SNe, KNe/NSNS, GRB afterglows,
  • Vast discovery space in ‘low-surface-brightness’ regime, that is not accessible to past wide surveys (e.g. dwarfs outside local group, intra-cluster light, merger-induced tidal features)
  • New discovery space for the rarest, most extreme galaxies (e.g. mergers, starbursts, high-z systems) especially when combined with IR surveys

Research Inclusion: sonification of LSST lightcurves

Riley Clarke, UD grad student Sid Patel, UD undergrad summer research project

Sonification: Data → Sound

New way of understanding data

  • Can be complementary to visualizations
  • Gives access to people who cannot
    interpret data visually

  • Sounds cool! Good for public outreach

Research Inclusion: sonification of LSST lightcurves
