Is IoT overrated?

I'm Félix

to start... What's IoT anyway?

Multiple definitions, e.g.

According to...

A global network infrastructure, linking physical and virtual objects through the exploitation of  data capture and communication capabilities.

CASAGRAS -2009

A world wide network of interconnected objects uniquely addressable, based on standard communication protocols

ETP EPoSS -2008

is the network of physical devices, vehicles, home appliances and other items embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators, and connectivity which enables these objects to connect and exchange data.

Wikipedia

A global network and service infrastructure of variable density and connectivity with self configuring capabilities based on standard and interoperable protocols and formats which consists of heterogeneous things that have identities, physical and virtual attributes, and are seamlessly and securely*intega ed into the Internet.

IoT-SRA

It is rather a new paradigm that involves a wide set of technologies, applications and visions. It can focus on the virtual identity of the smart objects and their capabilities to interact intelligently with other objects, humans and environments or on the seamless integration between different kinds of objects and networks toward a service oriented architecture of the future Internet.

The Internet of Things: 20th Tyrrhenian Workshop on Digital Communications (Giusto et al.,editors,2010)

To me, IoT is a paradigm of networked technology development centered in the capability of physical and virtual objects to communicate. And so, IoT products, architectures, protocols, platforms and all layers must cover the ability of objects to communicate between them and to the world.

to me...

...keeping it simple

Things with internet that gives value to process that were not designed for it.

Is a smart phone an IoT device?

Where did it started?

1832:Electromagnetic telegraph

...since the early 1800s...

1850:Computers development

early 1980s:Coca Cola+Internet

Current example... evergreen design in Tesla

Technology fields interconnection

IoT skills

Do we really need to talk about IoT as a separate field?

Yes?

No?

The truth is...

... at least the discussion should exist and as long as it does, and as long as techology evolve and needs grow, IoT projects will grow.

do sftwr devs need to care?

What are we still missing to define for IoT ecosystems? Standards for...

  • Architecture
  • Protocols
  • Interoperability
  • Security

It has started ad only this year has been released the first ISO standard for IoT projects.

Conclusions

  • We all use IoT devices
  • Most of our development will eventually be part of an IoT ecosystem
  • IoT is one of the fields that will economically grow the more in the next years.
  • IoT fields of implementation will continue to grow as long as there needs to be fulfilled.
  • We all ca contribute to it.
