Creating a

GeoGeeks Community

Remember

Some years ago,

  • Apps

We had a lot of problems with...

What is GIS??

What is ArcGIS

Wait...

  • Learning

Apps...

or better, Viewers

were...this!

or...this!

...Viewers

...Viewers

or...this!

...Bored!

...Viewers

Well, Flex help...

...Viewers

Well, Flex help...

....Not mobile

But...

So...

there's more

But...

Learning Model

Learning Model

ArcGIS Community

We have few...

Developers

even more...

Developers

ArcGIS Community

We have few...

1. Community

in fact

Create an App, was...

Some people,

try to develop using ArcGIS,

but...

So, we needed to change this..

How to convert to developers and creative people in...

...GIS Fans?

How to convert to developers and creative people in...

We had two ways...

1. Traditional Learning

  • Courses:

  • Workshops:

  • Tutorials:

  • Webminar:

3 Days inside a classrom

1 Day inside a classrom

24 hours on Internet, and heavy lectures

Differents Needs

Bored!! Again!

But...Then

What should we do now?

A different way...

We need a GeoTeam

Let's go to create

But, How?...

1. Change the Learning Model...

Let's use an idea like a project, but more fun.

Based on Learning Model of

Intel Computer ClubHouse

This learning model is about

This learning model is about

Also...

We need

a new approach

let's be honest,...

ArcGIS Apps, are not particularly pretty.

 We need a designer

Put it together

GIS + Design + Devs =

GeoApps

GIS + Design + Devs =

GeoApps

It's mean...

Also, for make relationship and friendship, is better create mini groups.

It means...

Easy Projects: 3 People

Hard Projects: +3 People

GIS Thematic + Developer + Geo Designer

Geo Project = Geo Idea

GIS Thematic + Developer + Geo Designer

Geo Project = Geo Idea

But....

Not everything is fun,

we must be organized, but agile.

But....

Not everything is fun,

we must be organized, but agile.

Including Scrum

 Methodology

Dev + GIS + Design + Scrum

=

Agile & Effective GeoApp

But...

All this is

real?

Let's do it

in 2014...Esri Colombia

We have created

SIG Team

Semillero de Innovación Geográfica

SIG, it mean... GIS but in Spanish...

Semillero de Innovación Geográfica

Currently and in just one Year

Maps & Apps Gallery:   + 45 Feature Apps and Maps

They have created:        + 100 GeoApps (StoryMaps, WebApps, Native                                          Apps, Scripts & Desktop Apps)

GitHub:                            + 20 Repositories (Apps and Contributions)

GeoGeeks:     More than 25 trained people, currently are 12 guys,

but many people are now working with customers or in Esri Colombia.

Currently and in just one Year

Twitter:       + 1.000 Followers

YouTube:    Webminars about GIS Development and Spatial Analisis

Meetup:      + 300 GeoGeeks

Website:     desarrolladores.esri.co,  local portal in Spanish for GIS                       developers in Colombia.

Currently and in just one Year

They have apps in:

  • Play Store of Google,
  • Apple Store,
  • and Windows Phone Store

This is really  important, beacuse in Colombia the Native Develoment using ArcGIS Tec. is very low., So, They try to increase the community showing the advantages and features

Now they are the seed of a GIS community in Colombia

Now we are GeoGeeks

We try to create our community of Developers or GeoGeeks using this Methodology.

Challenge today,

With GeoDevelopers (Esri España) and GeoTec (UJI)

European GeoGeeks :)

Excellent resource for GIS projects and development.

smart.uji.es

UJI Smart Campus

UJI Smart Campus

Excellent resource for GIS projects and development.

Or using GIS for create tools useful in the Smart Cities

http://geo-c.eu/

Some conclusions

  • Currently, the design is very a important component in a GIS solution or GeoApp.
  • We must promote the creativity inside GIS Teams, based on their interest.
  • You can use the project concept for create anything that you want, and try develop your idea using a small team.
  • Always it will be important explore new tools or technologies and comment with others for increase the knowledge. (Beta Programs).
