"FUNDAMENTALS OF FEEDBACK SYSTEMS:
A CONTENT AND LANGUAGE INTEGRATED APPROACH"
OBJECTIVES (1/2)
Primary Objective (Content-Based)
Students will know the basic principles of feedback systems, their applications in different disciplines, and their useful in the understanding of complex processes such as second language acquisition (SLA).
"FUNDAMENTALS OF FEEDBACK SYSTEMS:
A CONTENT AND LANGUAGE INTEGRATED APPROACH"
OBJECTIVES (2/2)
Secondary Objective (Language-Based)
Students will know important aspects of
language learning based on their own real-time experience of SLA and the
examples and activities proposed by the teacher, related to feedback systems.

BRAINSTORM
WHAT ARE FEEDBACK CONTROL SYSTEMS?
and in
which real-life situations have you recognized one?
QUICK GAME: "STOP"
QUICK GAME: "STOP"
KEY IDEA 1
“Control systems are ubiquitous, essential, and largely invisible to the general public” (IEEE CSS)
REFLECTION ABOUT THE GAME
Behind all the words mentioned in the game there
are one or more feedback control systems.
MOTIVATING EXAMPLES
MOTIVATING EXAMPLES: The SIR Epidemic Model
MOTIVATING EXAMPLES: Shellfish Culture
MOTIVATING EXAMPLES: Engineering
MOTIVATING EXAMPLES: Language Models
Taken from: (1) and (2)
BASIC CONCEPTS: SYSTEMS & MODELS
- System is "what is to be studied".
- "A model is an abstraction of reality (i.e., system)"
NONLINEAR MODELS
-
"Most of real life problems involve nonlinear systems"
- "The nonlinear system are very hard to solve explicitly"
BASIC CONCEPTS: MODELS
- "A model is not unique"
- "We will never have a perfect model"
BASIC CONCEPTS: INPUT/OUTPUT MODELS
-
Models allow us to reason about a system and make predictions about how a system will behave.
- The signals represent the interaction of the system with its environment (inputs and outputs).
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE: LANGUAGE MODELS
-
"Second language (L2) is considered as a separate and qualitatively different system from first language (L1)".
- "In adult users, L1 is considered as a largely deterministic or stable-state form of language".
-
"L2 is considered as a nonlinear dynamic system. It is used with relatively high degree of unpredictability". (Sumi, 2003)
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE: SLA Model
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE: SLA Model
Taken from (5)
AFFECTIVE FILTER in SLA Model
KEY IDEA 2
-
Dynamical Systems are essential to analyze Real-World Applications. “Mother Language (L1) and Second Language (L2) are systems with very different dynamics ”
BASIC CONCEPTS: FEEDBACK SYSTEMS
BASIC CONCEPTS: FEEDBACK SYSTEM
"Feedback is a central feature of life"
"Feedback allows a system to be very insensitive both to external disturbances and to variations in its individual elements".
BASIC CONCEPTS: CONTROL SYSTEM
The concept of the feedback loop to control the dynamic behavior of the system: this is negative feedback, because the sensed value is subtracted from the desired value to create the error signal,
SIMPLE FORMS OF FEEDBACK: On-Off Control
DISCUSSION: L1/L2 Control in a CLIL Classroom
KEY IDEA 3 :
-
Control theory can be applied in any context: "L2 can be controlled in a CLIL classroom in order to gain better content understanding and progressive
mechanism of SLA".

By John Alexander Taborda
Fundamentals-Feedback-Systems (M&S 2019-II)
This is an introductory lesson about control of dynamical systems. The lesson has been designed with a twofold motivation. First, give an interdisciplinary view of the basic principles of feedback control systems and their applications in different contexts. Second, propose that “the language”, inherent to all people, can be used as an alternative study case in multi-discipline scenarios.
