What is happening
in North Korea?

During World War II, the territories of North and South Korea were part of Japan as colonies.
After the defeat of the Land of the Rising Sun, Korea became a disputed territory that the Soviet Union and the United States of America wanted to control.

IDEOLOGY OF NORTH KOREA

To understand what life in North Korea looks like through the eyes of ordinary people, it is advisable to study its ideological basis.
It was formed at the beginning of the 20th century by the country's leader Kim Il Sung, and communist ideas were taken as its basis, taking into account local specifics.

RESTRICTIONS FOR TOURISTS

Buying a tour to the most closed country in the world is very difficult.
This is due to the fact that travel agencies do not sell tickets.
They are available from the official agency of North Korea, which plans to start its activities on the territory of the Russian Federation.

REAL STANDART OF LIVING

  • There are practically no products in local stores, as residents receive food on special coupons-cards.
  • Food packages allocated by the state may contain vodka, sweets and other products that are not available. However, this is observed only on major public holidays, like coupons for clothes.

ACCOMMODATIONS

  • Electricity and running water work only at certain hours, and not for all residents.

  • The houses are in a state of disrepair.

  • About 1% of the population lives in labor camps.

WOMEN SOLDIERS

  • Women in the DPRK are required to serve a minimum of seven years; the service life for men is 10 years, one of the longest conscription periods in the world.
  • According to the authorities, military spending is about 15% of the country's budget, but experts are inclined to think that this figure could reach 40%.
One specialist says that when she brought up the topic of violence in the military with women in the military, most of the women said "it happened to others." None of them admitted to being harmed by it.
Experts of North Korea unanimously declare sexual harassment in the DPRK army.
Now the situation is a little better, since Kim Jong-un is in power, and under him the dictatorship has weakened a little, compared to the policies of his father and grandfather.
