TYPES AND STYLES OF MUSIC VIDEOS!

PRESENTED BY SABAHAT KASHIF

There are three types of music videos.
1) Performance based

2) Concept based

3) Narrative based
1) PERFORMANCE BASED MUSIC VIDEOS

A music video showing an artist/ band performing, singing or playing their instruments is known as a performance based video. Although in such types of music videos the artists don't have to move and dance. They often contain

close-up shots of the artist/ band.

For example:

Sum 41- still waiting this is filmed on a stage, an effective way of advertising the talent of the band.

2) CONCEPT BASED MUSIC VIDEOS

It is a type  of a music video which revolves around an idea or a concept. These types of music videos tend to be in an absolute novel or take advantages of a particular editing or filming technique.

"Californication" the music video is in the form of an animated video game, not only does it intrigue a target audience but also emphasize the technological advancements and practices used in today's modern music videos.

3) Narrative based music videos

Such music videos mostly contain footage that attempts to tell a story through the moving images. Music videos like these have a story line, linked to the lyrical content, although such isn't the case always. These narrative based videos tend to be popular with songs that are featured in films and parts of film/ scenes that are cut into the music videos. narrative videos often follow the generic beginning, middle and end layout as illustrated by "Stand by me- Oasis)

DIFFERENT STYLE AND TECHNIQUES USED IN A MUSIC VIDEO
1) ANIMATED MUSIC VIDEOS

They have an animated film/cartoons with the sound playing at the back. Even though the song is produced by the original artist/band  these music videos didn't have anything real to show to the audience. Such videos are designed by using different software's and usually have a low budget as they are entirely digital.

For example, 'RUDE BY RIHANA.

2) INTERPRETIVE MUSIC VIDEOS

These music videos can be interpreted by the audience in many ways. Such videos don't have a set morale and the audience will interpret whatever they think. the audience watches music videos like these and take their own meaning from it depending on their opinions and knowledge.

Example for this is PINK-TRY

3) INTERTEXTUALITY

References used from some other media product, some mythology, history or any other existing thing is taken and shown in this type of music video.

Example for this is Dark horse- Katty Perry

4) Impressionist

Such videos are used to make the audience feel a certain way, seemingly unrelated random and peculiar shots are used to represent the theme, although the shots will often relate to the current lyrics playing in the video. The shots include everyday objects, people, scenic locations, obscure objects and abstract features.

5) SURREALIST

These videos are similar to impressionist videos. Such videos are very abstract and they may not have a relation even with the music itself. They contain artificially unreal or superstitious elements. Surrealist music videos give a very dream like effect to the audience.

Example for this is ET- Katty Perry

6) Allusion

It is similar to intertextuality to some extent. It gives reference of another thing directly or indirectly. It depends on how the audience sees the music video and how they make a connection between the thing they have seen before.
