Director (D)

  • Directs set up, gives guidelines to each crew member, and oversees take down
  • Understands how each piece fits into the whole - a mental map of the production parts as well as the chronology of the show
  • 'Calls the show' - from start to finish, giving the Technical Director instructions about which camera gets recorded using the "ready, take" cues.
  • Gives direction to crew during shoot
  • Communicates with Floor Director via headset
  • Makes sure the production is saved and stored properly.
  • Location: studio control room

(Technical) Director examples:

Technical Director (TD)

  • Operates the video switcher
  • Informs the Director of any video/switcher issues
  • Discuss direction style ahead of time!
  • Follow Director cues during the show

Audio Engineer (AE)

  • Gets microphones, mics talent
  • Runs audio test
  • Monitors and adjusts audio levels on mixer
  • Unmics talent during breaks or after show is over (always retest if the mic is moved or adjusted)

Camera Operator (CO)

  • Remote camera control skills pan and tilt (pacman vs flight controls)
  • Zoom, focus, framing, iris
  • Records memorized shots for variety/flexibility
  • Listens to director adjusts camera accordingly

Teleprompter Operator (TO)

  • Formats the script
  • Rehearses the script running the teleprompter (audio test?)
  • Runs the teleprompter during the shoot
  • Follow the talent's lead-- don't rush them or go too slow!
  • Location: studio

What happens when you go too fast or too slow on the teleprompter?

Character Generator 

 (CG)

  • Updates Titles, Lower 3rds and graphics before show
  • Confirm talent name and title spelling
  • Two CG channels are possible
  • Coordinate with Director, TD
