Children of the Tech-era

Understanding the use of technology for a child's developement

Infants and toddlers interact primarily with people. Their interactions with toys are usually in the context of human interaction as well

Technology is used as a tool for distraction

What effect does it have on a child?

Technology changes the way their brains work

It has changed the way children feel - affect a child’s ability to empathize

Technology Can Put Privacy and Safety at Risk

More Use of Technology with Less Physical Activity Leads to Fatigue child

The long term effects can be foreseen as affecting their

  • Eye Sight
  • Brain Activity
  • Physical Exercise
  • Thinking ability
  • Emotional Connection

The Long-run

Device an alternate solution of usage pattern

Digital

Analogue

Over the holidays, I watched my 5- and 9-year-old nieces navigate iPhones and iPads with ease, using the devices better than some CEOs I know. Today's children and teenagers will never know a world without social media or handheld technology.

Behavioural Change

Instinctual Response - Kids know exactly what to do when they see a tablet or a smartphone - Swipe

Ability to grasp quick - Kids are constantly learning as they view something new on their devices and quickly grasp the information available to them.

Critical Thinking The amount and diversity of information available on the Internet may foster critical thinking

"The emergence of a new kind of media...creates an opportunity to do it right this time--to really think at the outset about what kind of media we're going to create for children."

Kathryn Montgomery

PhD, President of the Center for Media Education, Washington D.C

Instead of realizing what is good and bad, I want to create a new media that will change the manner in which children interact with both the digital and physical surrounding.

The Idea - Augmented Reality Excercise

Interactivity with between digital and physical environment

History and Evolution of Communication

How can communication change the way children  interact with their surrounding ?

Melvin Konner

Anthropologist and Physician

His new book, The Evolution of Childhood, is a 2 decade long effort to explain why children everywhere develop, behave, mature and think as they do.

Melvin Konner, In an interview with Smithsonian Magazine

executive editor Terence Monmaney,

"Brain imaging has been difficult in infants and children because they don’t stay still, but new methods are beginning to compensate for that, and we will know much more about brain function in developing children in real time."

Understanding Brain Developement Patterns in Children

Phase 3

I am studying how children use and interact with digital devices

Because I want to find out if there is a new medium of interaction

In order to improve the development in a child's growth

In one part of the interview, Konner mentions about how Brain Imaging affects infants and children. The effects of new technology involuntarily has had that effect that Konner's is talking about. The diversion of the mind from an agitated state to a submissive one with the involvement of a digital interface is one that is developed among the children of today.
