Designing for New Journeys
2024
LASALLE, Singapore
Designing for New Journeys is a creative workshop where design and technology meet to redefine cartography by taking into account various cultural factors.
Unlike off-the-shelf mobile map apps, the workshop asks participants to conceptualise, create and sketch a personalised map system that can cater to unique experiences for locals and tourists.

The challenge begins by imagining the following scenario
As a visitor, you arrive at the airport in Singapore, from where you need to get to the LASALLE building. Often the easiest way to do so is to take a taxi to get from point A to point B.
What would it take to make this journey more exciting and eventful for a visitor by being guided by a mobile map app specifically made for an unconventional journey?

Designing for New Journeys
2024
Imagine that we can use any means of transport–taxi, public transport, walking, cycling, etc–to get from A to B.
What landmarks and places can we visit on the way to capture the unique identity and culture of this new place we have just arrived, through conventional and, more interestingly, unconventional encounters?
What places do you think one should visit to get a distinctive sense of the city we have just arrived in?

Process
- Sketch your ideas digitally or on paper through drawings, illustrations, diagrams, maps
- Make use of map apps to find and identify places and the route(s) from A to B
- Use digital tools to visualise (MidJourney, Dall-e, text-to-image on Hugging Face) and visually articulate (Miro) your ideas through generated images, collages, text and diagrams (optional video and sound)
Workshop approach
The approach to this brief is experimental, conceptual and comes alive through its ideas, your ideas. To better frame the approach and outcomes the following criteria apply:
Outcomes
- Express ideas, concepts through verbal, written and visual means
- Collection of materials including idea description and a series of visual materials (sketches, generated visuals, screen grabs from Miro, maps, map drawings)
