DigiPak Codes & Conventions

What is a digipak?

a digipak is a type of packaging for CDs or DVDs, typically made from cardboard with an internal plastic holder for one or more discs.

Front Cover

- Tends to have a large eye catching picture that draws in the attention of the target audience.

- The picture on the front cover is conventionally related to the album (either the artist or the songs).

- The artists' name and album title is found on the front cover.

Back Cover

The back cover usually includes:

- Barcode

- Artist/album name

- Tracklist

- Album artwork

- Record label

- Extra information

Inside

- The inside of the DigiPak is used more for information and extra bits to do with the artist/song/album.

- You can also find more artwork to do with the disc on the inside of the pack.

- Extra information provided within the packaging would include song lyrics, artist information and personal messages

Fold

DigiPaks are designed to fold into a square CD case

- They usually have a gatefold like a book.

- They can fold many different ways and can have different amount of panels.

- The cardboard/paper folds around the plastic case which secures the disc in place.

Extra codes & conventions

- The front and back panels are the main ‘promoters’ of the CD and are very much used to draw in the customers.

- The theme of the inside packaging normally is more subtle compared to the outside packaging.

After looking at these conventions, it is clear what I need to focus on when creating my own digipak;

- a recurring theme (including a consistent colour scheme)

- artist and album name

- eye-catching front cover

- production details

- record label logo

- album artwork details
