Unit 7 Project

By Tayla Hamilton

About my Project:

My project is going to be about comparing the amount of people that play the most popular games to the genders that play the game. The main goal of my project is to find out which gender plays video games the most. Although this might be an obvious answer I still would like to get a picture of the answer in data form in order to be able to conclude the answer with evidence.

According to the ranker website, the list of games are most popular for all age ranges:

  • Grand theft auto V
  • Minecraft
  • Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Seige
  • Overwatch
  • PlayerUnknown's battlegrounds
  • League of Legends

Which gender plays video games the most?

According to the chart before, it looks like you could conclude that males play video games more than females, however, it is important to find the mean and standard deviation for the data to make sure.

91,000,000 x 0.19 = 71,290,000 91,000,000 x 0.79 = 71,890,000
147,000,000 x 0.63 = 92,610,000 147,000,000 x 0.37 = 54,390,000
360,761 x 0.15 = 54,114.15 360,761 x 0.70 = 252,532.70
80,000,000 x 0.276 = 57,920,000 80,000,000 x 0.724 = 22,080,000

Finding the Mean and Standard Deviation of the Data:

After finding the estimate of how many people from each gender play each of the four games, I used a calculator to find the mean and standard deviation for each gender:

Female:

Mean- 41,968,528.54

Standard Deviation- 36,002,972.02

male:

Mean- 37,153,133.18

Standard Deviation- 27,805,634.11

According to my data, the mean shows that females play video games more than men which is surprising since the stereotype is that males play more than females. Also, the standard deviation for males is lower than for females, which means there is less of a variability for males which results in the data being clustered around the mean.

Does the data appear to be biased?

As I examined the data, I looked at all four of the games and compared the result of the data to my research. When the question "is the data biased?" is asked, I looked at my research and saw that the three out of the four sources I found have tried to agree with the view that  males play video games more than females.  One source however, out of the four, stated that females played the game Pokemon go more than males. This in my opinion, gives a biased view to the data since only one out of the four games stated that females played more than males. I later found out, however, that from my data females played more than males which was very interesting.  Moreover, since the data that I have now is certain to change, in the future the same data could become biased as time goes on.

Is there enough data to draw conclusions?

Even though I have chosen only four games out of the millions of games out there, In my opinion the data that I have is enough to draw approximate conclusions. I say this because data can most often be inaccurate and the conclusions that I can make from this data as a result can only be an estimate.

Conclusion

The purpose of my project was to find the answer to which gender plays video games the most. As I did my research and found information from different sources, I found a lot of estimated data as well as data found from surveying people to create a statistic. When I did some more research and created charts and made calculations according to the data, I was surprised when I discovered that from my data females played more video games than males. This surprised me because I was used to the stereotype and the typical representation of gamers being male. As I conclude my project, It is important to understand that my data is an estimate which can have a possibility of being inaccurate because of the amount of people surveyed as well as errors in the information. According to the data that I have collected from four of my chosen games, I can conclude that an estimate of 41,968,528.54 females play more video games than 37,153,133.18 males.
