Speech & Debate is all about
public speaking and critical thinking.
Talking to people is a life skill!
We compete in tournaments around
the Northeast in APDA/NPDA.

Common point of confusion: are they the same?

These are separate events, which meet independently.
We combine as an organization to support each other.
Speech
Speech is presentational.
Events include:
- Persuasive
- Impromptu
- Poetry/prose
- Original oratory
- Humorous/dramatic interpretation

Debate
Debate is argumentative.
We do a single format called Parliamentary
where you debate any topic proposed by one side.
Skills you'll learn include:
- Public speaking (on the fly)
- Critical thinking (in the moment)
- Persuasion
- Creativity
- And more!
Parli Debate
Parli is a 2v2, 45-minute format judged
by coaches and peers.
The two sides, government and opposition,
square off on a topic given by the gov.
Resolutions include:
- Traditional topics like int'l affairs, domestic policy, etc.
- "The estate of Tupac should go on a hologram tour..."
- "You are Batman, and the Joker..."
- "Pokemon promotes animal abuse."
