statistical modeling of saps location

What are saps?

  • SAPS are westward directed flows observed in subauroral ionosphere.
  • Traditionally, they were expected to occur during geomagnetic storms/disturbances.
  • Sources:
    • Separation between ion and electron precipitation boundaries.
    • Electric fields in the sub-auroral region (Pedersen currents).
