Response on Drafts

Read and react to fellow group members draft content and leave comments and interaction based on use of thesis, discourse community details, secondary source integration.

1

Revision Planning

From our articles and text readings on revision and drafting, what are THREE major takeaways that Grauman, DePeter, Murray, or Lamott say about drafting and revision pointers? Can you apply these to your draft?

2

What's Missing?

Are there additional sources or angles that could help your current research draft? As a group, discuss what ideas or sources could take the draft in new directions.

3

  • Once you are placed in a group for peer response, we will be interacting with your group's drafts for the purposes of Wednesday and Friday's classes. In Canvas, you access assigned peer reviews by clicking on the 1st Rough Draft you submitted and clicking on peer reviews at the top of the screen (in Canvas browser). Scroll down to see the draft. Leave comments based on the following:
    • How does your classmate effectively talk about discourse community? Does this work or could it be made clearer?
    • What is the THESIS STATEMENT? Does this give you a good idea of the argument or content that the essay will cover?
    • How are SECONDARY SOURCES integrated into the writing? Do quotes or paraphrases work? Could they be worked in more efficiently?

Part 1: Read and Respond

Once the group has read and left comments for their group members, engage in the following:

  • Everyone take a turn and follow-up with the comments they received. Where are you are at with the current rough draft?
  • Do you feel that your sources effectively helped your writing and conversation about discourse community?
  • What additional research angles, keywords, or topics might help take your research in a new direction?

Part 2: Review & Discuss

  • Coaching Comments (150)
  • Reacting Comments (151)
  • Questioning (Other) Comments (152)

Recommendations From Grauman

1. What goals do you need to set?

2. What feedback is the most important to review?

3. What are your major reactions to feedback?

4. What follow-up questions do you have for peer responders

5. What actions will you take moving forward?

What types of comments are you leaving? From Grauman...

  • Do my readers understand my thesis statement? Do I make this clear in my writing?
  • Am I using my secondary sources to support my writing about discourse community?
  • Am I informing, persuading, helping my readers understand my discourse community and the research topics important to them?
  • What major take-aways from our articles and readings on revision and peer response are the most important to consider right now for this rough draft?
