from PLPM Presentation...

Students attend events related to their own interest and study areas.

Problem Statement

from PLPM Presentation...

  1. Create a centralized content channel that features a vibrant message regarding upcoming campus events. The channel will  play throughout the day on two minute cycles, that can be readily updated.

  2. Brand existing electronic displays throughout campus as event information stations.

  3. Develop resources for event coordinators to centralize processes, share their events, and cross-promote across silos.

Possible Solution

Our APproach

Leveraging research and benchmarking that we will perform, along with bringing on new systems, UMBC will be in a position to make budgetary and procedure decisions regarding the future of digital displays, as well as update the existing posting policy.

With our newly reformed digital displays user group, we should be in a better position to begin rolling out support, shared content, and updates to individual locations and departments.

Desired Outcome

By Fall 2020

  • Revised posting policy and procedures for campus' digital displays
  • Support existing displays and replace hardware that doesn't work
  • Launch new systems for managing content on digital displays
  • Engaged user group that inform development, growth, and support
  • Make decisions about adding and repositioning displays, including new "Grand Gesture" displays
  • Achieve PLPM vision for sharing event information around campus on digital displays.
  • Test, optimize, repeat.

IDEAS INTO ACTION

  1. Conduct an inventory of UMBC's public-facing digital displays
  2. (Re)form the digital displays user group
  3. Define requirements and resources needed (Virtual & Physical)
  4. Develop display templates incorporating new UMBC brand
  5. Prototype and test new display formats
  6. Internal ownership, policies, standards and procedures
  7. Display locations and future planning

Risevision

software that may not be meeting our needs

  • Displays are configured as a series of decentralized "Companies"
  • Content cannot be shared from one "Company" to another
  • Building slides, animations and scheduling content is tedious and makes a "UMBC in 2" concept difficult to execute for most users.
  • Inconsistent usage of RiseVision feature set, results may vary
  • Difficult to support when things aren't working correctly
  • UI and UX may frustrate users and make mistakes more likely
  • Did not deliver on promised functionality

current state

Hardware failures like these can be attributed to a variety of issues like ventilation, outdated technology, improper installation, and departmental budgeting.

(Budget range delivered by February / March 2020 in advance of planning season)
