Crafting Your Story

What does a recruiter do?

Why Do Recruiters Get In Trouble?

What does a hiring manager care about?

Why do hiring managers get in trouble?

What are their fears?

We must convince them to

Most candidates don't actually tell stories

Bangerter, Corvalan & Cavin (2014) about 23% of answers to past-behavior questions were full stories

BUTTTT stories predicted better hiring recommendations and self-descriptions ("I'm a team player") predicted worse

Stories are remembered

A 2021 (Mar et al) meta-analysis of 75+ samples and 33,000+ participants found narrative text is better understood and recalled than expository text

First impressions formed in small talk leak into structured scores on the first few questions, then fade (Swider, Barrick & Harris 2016)

How To Craft Your Story

PEDs

Past > Evidence > Direction

ā€œI used to work in restaurants, but I wanted something different. I started learning to code, did a bootcamp, and now I’m hoping someone will give me a chance.ā€

At my last company, I managed restaurant shifts, where scheduling changes and handoffs were daily challenges.

That led me to build an independent shift-swap application using TypeScript, React, and Node. I designed the approval workflow, implemented the application, and revised it after walkthroughs with multiple restaurant managers.

I’m now looking for a product-engineering role where I can combine that hands-on development experience with an understanding of how frontline teams actually work. The scheduling problems your team is tackling are particularly interesting to me
