Analysis of survey results
i conducted a survey
The point of this survey was to establish a firm understanding of what people expect and know about music magazines. Aside from the general audience's knowledge about this type of media, I also asked questions about themselves to find and understand my prospective audience; helping me meet their criteria when creating my magazine.
31
PEOPLE
TOOK IT.
Out of the 31 people that took my survey, 39% of them were males and 61% were females.
Everyone was between the ages of 16 and 20.
(Only one male was between 21 and 25)
R&B is the most listened to genre by both genders.
However
No one actually buys music magazines.
when asked about it, many people said that they can find the information online, they are a "waste of space" or simply, they are no longer appealing.
How will i apply my results to my magazine?
Visual content
Colour scheme ideas
When asked about what colour scheme would make their ideal music magazine, half of the survey participants said that a "bold and bright" palette would be the most appealing. However, 30% also said that it doesn't matter.
MAGAZINE FEATURES
i FOUND...
From my results, I have gathered that the most important feature that draws a potential reader are the visual aspects of a magazine; the participants placed a great importance in a bold magazine cover and graphic images within the magazine. These features are followed after by interviews with artists, criticisms and updates on upcoming gigs/tours/etc. Gossip is arguably irrelevant in making the ideal music magazine.
Target audience
I would not limit my magazine to a specific gender since music shouldn't be restricted to any sex. Furthermore, I think that my magazine should be available to everyone.
However, my magazine would be centred around the interests of teenagers to young adults (16-20 age range) as my survey showed.
GENRE
According to my survey, most people preferred R&B; where both genders had the highest preference for this genre. Therefore, I will apply this to my magazine considering the majority prefers this music genre. Followed after this is Hip-Hop, Rock and then Indie.
PEOPLE WERE MOST FAMILIAR WITH:
Kerrang! and NME
These magazines are bold, filled with a lot of text at the front and a large masthead. They are vibrant with colour and represent their genre very accordingly. Rock music is loud and creative - and I intend to use this concept when portraying my chosen genre.
And it seems that people are more aware of these two magazines because of the said features, therefore I will try and apply the same techniques when making my magazine.
26 people wanted promotions
(this means they wanted discounts on selected ticket prices for concerts).
The rest wanted freebies.
pOSTERS, "SHEET MUSIC", ETC...
LASTLY
iN SPITE MOST PEOPLE SAYING THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH CURRENT MUSIC MAGAZINES, THERE WAS A SMALL MINORITY COMPLAINING THAT "THEY STILL EXIST" (PLACING MORE IMPORTANCE ON ONLINE RESOURCES) OR THE MOST AVAILABLE MUSIC MAGAZINE BELONGS TO THE ROCK GENRE.
