What is FHIR?

Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources

FHIR Stand's for

FHIR Basics Definition

  • FHIR is an open-source standard developed by the healthcare industry to facilitate the exchange of healthcare information between disparate systems, created by HL7 International.

  • Improves efficiency in health care delivery by standardizing electronic data interchange

  • Protects confidentiality and security of health data by enforcing standards

FHIR Standards Includes

  • Resource-oriented for organizing health data
  • RESTful for easy integration
  • Standardized for consistency
  • Interoperable for seamless data exchange
  • Modular for flexibility
  • Extensible for future-proofing
  • Patient-centric for personalized care
  • Human-readable for easy understanding
  • Open-source for accessibility.

In Simple Terms

FHIR Goal

FHIR has following Purpose

  1. Improving healthcare interoperability and data exchange

  2. Establish standards for the electronic transmission of Resources

  3. Enabling access to health information at the point of care

  4. Simplifying the development of healthcare applications and tools

  5. Enhance patient care

  6. Support multiple paradigms and architecture

  7. Leverage cross-industry web technology

Resources &

Interoperability

Resources

  • A unit of information in FHIR, representing a single piece of meaningful data. Eg:  a person, a medication, or a lab result.
  • A unit defines behavior and meanings. Eg: patient's demographic information or a medication order
  • Each FHIR resource has a unique identifier (a URL called the "canonical URL")
  • Each resources represent small unit of transactions

Resources Example

 Syntax [base]/[type]/[id] {?_format=[mime-type]}

Interoperability

Interoperability

  • The ability of different systems and devices to work together and exchange information seamlessly, without any obstacles or errors
  • It allows for the sharing of data and communication between systems in a standardized and efficient manner.

  • In healthcare, interoperability means that doctors, hospitals, and other healthcare providers can share information about patients to provide better care

  • Support paradigms are RestFul Api's, Messaging, Document and Service

Interoperability

Improve Patient Engagement

Patient Engagement

  • Patient portals
  • Mobile health apps
  • Wearable devices
  • Health information exchanges
  • Clinical decision support
  • Patient-generated data

Patient Engagement

The benefits of using FHIR

  • Increased patient satisfaction
  • Improved health outcomes
  • Enabling faster access to patient information
  • Improving communication and collaboration
  • Facilitating data sharing
  • Reduced healthcare costs

FHIR Architecture

FHIR Architecture

  • FHIR makes no assumptions about the architectural designs
  • We can use it for
    • Light or heavy clients
    • the central server or peer-to-peer sharing
    • Push or Pull
    • Query or publish/subscribe
    • Loosely coupled or tightly coupled env
  • Bottom Line, FHIR is a set of tools
    • Define resources
    • extensibility mechanism
    • set of standard interfaces

FHIR Implementation

FHIR Implementation

  • FHIR is implemented by both Government & Private Health Care institute

  • In July 2019, launched National Digital Health Blueprint (NDHB)
    • The ultimate goal is to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC) through Ayushman Bharat ( ABDM)

  • Apollo Hospital has launched Smart Connect Link

ABDM FHIR Implementation
