(After the movie was released, a lot of 'Real Life 21 Jump Street' drug busts have been happening in high schools across america).
Review
21 Jump Street is considered to be a teen movie because, it shows teenagers and how they act when they're in their high school environment. The movie holds similar characters like other teen movies which involve: the jock, the nerd, the popular kids etc.
Also, the film was mainly created to attract young teens because, of the setting which is a high school, relationships, rebellion, partying, drugs and alcohol.
The conventions which make this film a teen drama is the unlike any other movie. Usually, you would have a girl and a boy develop feelings along the film. However, in this movie we see the relationship between Jenko & Schmidt and how that evolves.
Like any other teen movie, Jenko is your stereotypical good looking jock who doesn't care about school and is rebellious to the school system, but then you have Schmidt who is a science geek, low self esteem and follows the school system. A turn of events happen, and roles are switched as both characters go back to high school.
21 Jump Street shows that teens in this modern culture care about parties and getting high all the time. It shows teenagers are judged before they were given a chance which ends up in them either rebelling the system or going with it.
In the beginning of the movie we see Jenko (Channing Tatum) being a very popular jock who hangs around with his group and Schmidt (Jonah Hill) being all by himself. However, as they become cops and go back to high school to find the dealers of the new synthetic drug, both characters forget their undercover names which completely changes their high school experience. Jenko's clique is now the nerd kids which carry out science experiments and making periodic table songs. On the other hand, you have Schmidt who is now placed in the drama and athletics classes therefore, making him hang around with the popular kids. Throughout the whole movie, we don't really pay attention to anything else happening outside the Popular & Nerd clique because, the movies main focus was on finding out the dealers and suppliers of the drugs and not forming relationships with outcasts.
This movie is similar to other teen movies because, the characters are similar based on stereotypes however, it's different because of the events and how the movie plays out overall.
I like this movie because, although it is very stereotypical we see relationships form and how the high school life works out for two undercover cops. We also see the influence of friends in the movie because, depending in which social group you are that's more than likely to affect your school progress. Overall, a great movie.
