Representation of main character

Positive,Negative or Complex?

She is Complex!!!
Our character is a binary opposition within herself as the two sides to her that the audience see are completely different.
The first version of the girl that you see is her on the edge of committing suicide  where she is depressed and lonely.
The second version of the girl that you see is her when she is in school and is happy flirtatious and witty.
We had to try and present to the audience one character that throughout the film had two different sides which was very challenging yet i think we managed to do it.

Camera
For the first version of the girl in which she is depressed and on the edge of ending her life we used shots that would make this clear to the audience. We used alot of extreme close-ups in this part of the film as we thought that this made visually look dramatic and serious. At the moment where she puts the pills inher mouth we used a low angle shot looking up at the girl to show that she was in control of what she was doing at it was all up to her.
When the girl is walking into school however we use alot of long shot an medium shots to show the audience that she is in a different setting. We also used alot of horizontal pans to show her surrounding environment.

Mise en scene
We tried most to make the mise en scene in our film representative of the two sides to the girl. When she is the depressed character, she is wearing dark clothes, smudged make-up,frizzy curly hair. Her body-language in this character sis shaky and on edge and slightly vulnerable which i think we got across to the audience well.

However when she is happy she wears a bright pink top, make-up is fine and her hair is straight. Her body language when she is walking to school is very confident and she struts. This is a complete contrast and hopefully shows the audience that their is a time change between these two completely different versions of the character.

Sound

For the first part of the film where the girl is in a suicidal state of mind we used music that reflected the mood quite slow but was also quite powerful. Over the top of this we had a series of echoed voiceovers that were suppose to show the audience what exactly the rumours were. The rumours stop when she takes the pills to show how serious it is and how clear her mind is when she does this.

When she is in the happy mindset we used a jolly song.Finding a song to represent the happy side was a challenge but in the end we settled for a remix of Nicki Minaj-starships.

Editing
The only time in which  we used complex editing was to create the distorted effect of the girl in the suicidal scenes.I had to put two images on top of each other and edit the opacity and positioning of it to create a double blurred effect. We used alot of slow motion in the suicidal scenes also to show the importance of a particular action.

Overall

Overall i wouldn't say that any of the technical aspects at the start edited  have effected the way we represented different social groups or characters. We had to change stereotypes slightly but i do not think that it edited the overall representation of the character.
