The many avatars of Big B 

Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan turns a year older on October 11. The multi-faceted actor has donned many roles. Here's a look at some of his memorable avatars..

In 1971, Bachchan starred in Hrishikesh Mukherjee's "Anand" which had legendary actor Rajesh Khanna in the lead role. The movie earned Bachchan his first Filmfare award, for Best Supporting Actor. 

Big B first tasted success as a hero in "Zanjeer" in 1973, which also established his image as the "angry young man". Director Prakash Mehra cast him as Inspector Vijay Khanna, a name that is famously associated with him in several movies. 

In 1975, came "Chupke Chupke" starring Dharmendra, Sharmila Tagore, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Asrani and Om Prakash. Directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, the movie had Bachchan in a comic role. He didn't get many other opportunities to step out of the "angry young man" avatar at that time of his career. 

The year 1975 was one of the golden years of Hindi cinema, with many box office hits starring Bachchan. The same year Ramesh Sippy's "Sholay" was released. The movie scorched the screens and the hearts of  many and became one of the cult hits of Hindi cinema.

1975 also saw the release of "Deewar" starring Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor. The dialogues between the brothers, one a criminal and the other a policeman, remain among the iconic ones in Hindi cinema. The film was directed by Yash Chopra and was a huge hit.

In 1981 and '82 Mr. Bachchan starred in two memorable movies - Yash Chopra's "Silsila" and R.N. Sippy's "Satte pe Satta" respectively - both of which went on to become big hits.

Mr. Bachchan suffered a severe intestinal rupture on July 26, 1982, during the filming of the iconic movie "Coolie" . Due to the injury he had to take a break from acting and  briefly entered politics. 

In 1988, Mr. Bachchan made a comeback to movies with "Shahenshah" which was successful at the box office.

In 1990, Big B got his first National Award for his role as a don in Mukul S. Anand's "Agneepath". 

In 1999 Mr. Bachchan had three releases "Sooryavansham", "Lal Baadshah" and "Hindustan Ki Kasam" out of which only "Sooryavansham" was successful at the box office.

In 2000 Big B appeared in Aditya Chopra's box-office hit, "Mohabbatein". He appeared in numbers of successful movies like "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham" and  "Baghban" "in the coming years.

In 2005 Amitabh Bachchan won another National Award for his role in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's "Black".

 In the following years, Bachchan gave powerful performances in movies like Rituparno Ghosh's "The Last Lear", Ram Gopal Verma's "Sarkar" and "Sarkar Raj" and R. Balki's "Paa". He also received National Award for "Paa".

In 2013 he made his Hollywood debut in "The Great Gatsby" playing the character of Meyer Wolfsheim. Directed by Baz Luhrmann, movie also starred Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgarton and Isla Fisher.

Big B was last seen in "Piku" . The Movie got both critical acclaim and box office success.
