COMPANY INFO

Nova combines proprietary drone technology with cinematic storytelling to create Sky Stories for audiences around the world. For more than a decade, we have pioneered this medium, producing narrative experiences told through precisely synchronized drones, visual design, and music.

We are also pleased to announce that Nova and SKYMAGIC have joined forces, bringing two world-class drone show pioneers under one roof. This strategic alliance unites over 25 years of combined experience and industry-leading technology to design and deliver unprecedented, high-impact aerial spectacles globally.

Originating from the original Intel drone light show division, which launched the first large-scale drone shows in 2012, Nova remains the category leader in drone entertainment. Today, that engineering foundation is part of our fully vertically integrated model. We design and manufacture our own drones and bring together research & development, hardware engineering, flight software, permitting and regulatory expertise, creative development, and show operations under one roof. This end-to-end approach gives Nova the ability to turn ambitious creative concepts into extraordinary, reliable, and repeatable experiences at scale.

SKYMAGIC were one of the worlds first Drone Light show companies in the world originally building its system in 2014 and being part of the wider NEWSUBSTANCE Group of Companies. Similar to Nova it has been a pioneer in this space leading the field in the development of pyro drones, the world's first laser drone and more recently smoke screen drones.

Merging Nova’s high-resolution, optimized drone platforms with SKYMAGIC's specialized pyro and laser-equipped drones will unite both companies' distinct technological and creative strengths, unlocking a completely new tier of hybrid high-fidelity multi-dimensional visual effects in the night sky.

The Vatican Lights Up the World

To celebrate the Catholic Church’s Jubilee Year, Nova Sky Stories launched Europe’s largest drone display over St. Peter’s Square, uniting 250,000 live spectators and millions watching globally. Accompanied by Andrea Bocelli and Teddy Swims singing "Amazing Grace," alongside performances by Pharrell Williams, John Legend, and Jennifer Hudson, 3,000 drones illuminated the night sky. The light show recreated Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam and Pietà directly above the Basilica for the first time in history. The fleet also formed a glowing portrait of Pope Francis, halos crowning the architecture, 3D hearts, doves of peace, and the word "JOY."

By executing this massive aerial performance over a UNESCO World Heritage site, Nova demonstrated flawless precision, strict safety, and deep cultural sensitivity on a global stage.

Drones Soar at the Opening Ceremony

During the Tokyo 2020 Opening Ceremony on July 23, 2021, 1,824 Intel drones transformed the night sky into a vast three-dimensional canvas, integrating technology directly into the event's artistic narrative. Following the Athletes’ Parade, the precisely choreographed aircraft shifted through intricate geometric patterns before morphing into the blue-and-white Tokyo 2020 emblem. The icon then transformed into a giant floating globe hovering above the stadium, serving as the visual center of the show.

This floating Earth became the emotional centerpiece as the ceremony transitioned into a powerful rendition of "Imagine," arranged by Hans Zimmer and performed by artists including John Legend and Keith Urban. Rather than treating the flight as a standalone visual effect, the creative team used the sky as an expanded stage to communicate a message of global connection and hope to millions of viewers worldwide.

PYEONGCHANG WINTER OLYMPICS

The World's First Olympic Drone Show

At the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics, Nova’s team (then part of Intel) introduced a new medium of live entertainment with the first-ever Olympic drone light show. Featuring a record-breaking 1,218 Intel Shooting Star drones acting as 3D aerial pixels, the performance created fluid animations, from a snowboarder to the Olympic Rings.

Achieving this required pioneering hardware, flight-control tech, animation software, and operational procedures to safely coordinate over 1,000 autonomous aircraft in extreme winter conditions and strong winds. PyeongChang marked a pivotal moment where drones evolved from simple aircraft into a powerful storytelling tool. It proved thousands of drones could be precisely choreographed for live global audiences, establishing the foundation for Nova's ongoing large-scale aerial productions.

Painting the Sky with a Pop Art Legend

For Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture, SKYMAGIC presented Painting the Sky, a drone performance honouring David Hockney in his hometown of Bradford. Bringing Hockney’s vibrant portfolio out of the gallery, 600 drones reinterpreted iconic masterpieces - including A Bigger Splash and his 2021 Self Portrait - over the historic Salts Mill and Roberts Park. Beyond the live show, SKYMAGIC utilised long-exposure photography to recreate Garrowby Hill through light painting. By meticulously calculating drone flight paths, they captured the painting’s signature rolling fields and winding roads in a single frame, captured by photographer William Turner. This collaboration stands as a brilliant tribute to Hockney’s inquisitive spirit and lasting artistic legacy.

PRODUCTION

PERFORMANCE AREA

PRODUCTION

In the Performance Area, there are three zones with essential requirements that must be taken into account to deliver shows safely and efficiently:

TOLZ - Take Off & Landing Zone (area marked purple)
The TOLZ is the area required for the drones to take off to perform in the Show Box and land safely afterwards. Further details and requirements on TOLZ are in the following slide.

Show Box (area marked green)
The Show Box is where the drones carry out performances. This is usually located above or adjacent to the TOLZ. We cannot fly over people, property, or vehicles that are not within event control.

Safety Zone (area marked yellow)
The Safety Zone is the enclosed area surrounding the TOLZ, Show Box, and the drones' flight path travelling between the TOLZ and Show Box. This area should be free of objects outside our control, such as audiences, buildings, roads, vehicles, etc. The perimeter must be at least 50 metres in all directions away from the TOLZ and Show Box.

Geofences (area outlined yellow and red)
Within the Safety Zone are two invisible Geofences. The primary and secondary Geofences effectively act as two safety boundaries around the Show Box and TOLZ, which give a command to go-home or disarm. For further details on this safety protocol, please request the SKYMAGIC Technical Overview.

SHOW BOX

TOLZ

SAFETY ZONE

GEOFENCES

TAKE OFF & LANDING ZONE

The drones Take Off and Landing Zone (TOLZ) needs to be a flat secure area within our Drone Performance Area, usually inside or adjacent to our Show Box.

Next to our TOLZ area, we require a secure marquee or location where we prepare, charge and conduct safety checks of the drones and associated kit.

SKYMAGIC requires production items such as power supply, local crew, radios, and on-site transport. As outlined in our technical rider, which is to be provided and paid for by the client.

We can be flexible to the available on-site space requirements, so please talk to our team for support on providing initial guidance on your site.

→ 500 drones = 500 sq/m
→ 1000 drones = 1000 sq/m
→ 1500 drones = 1500 sq/m

As a general rule, we work to a metre squared per drone spacial requirement.
For example:

PRODUCTION

METEOROLOGICAL

The performance may be cancelled, suspended or delayed, depending on weather conditions which may not compatible with the performance, these include but are not limited to:

→ Windy conditions with a consistent speeds of 8 meters p/s or greater.
→ Sand storm or thunder storm / electrical storm.
→ Snow, rain or extreme condensation as a result of high humidity.
→ Extreme weather states – flooding, typhoon and the like.
→ Extreme temperatures.

SKYMAGIC holds safety as paramount, whilst balancing a commitment to adapt and find solutions working with relevant stakeholders and where possible aim to fly the show within 24 hours.

PRODUCTION

TECHNICAL RIDER

While our Technical Rider varies by show format, location, and client contract, the following outlines SKYMAGIC’s requirements, which must be provided and paid for by the client:

→ All permissions from the Civil Aviation Authority and other relevant bodies; interested parties (Police, landowners, security etc.) and cover any associated fees and costs in securing these permissions.
