SVG  advantages

  • Text format – SVG files can be read and edited using ordinary text editors.
  • Scalability – SVG is a vector format and you can scale without loss of quality.
  • The SVG image is text, this means that it can be searched, indexed, scripted, and compressed.
  • Animation - the ability to control animation using CSS, JS and SMIL (Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language)
  • SVG - open standard.

SVG  disadvantages

  • It is difficult to use in cartographic applications because the document must be read whole to correctly display a small part of the image.
  • The size of SVG is growing quickly with a large number of small details in the image. The limiting case is when the image is white noise. In this case, SVG does not  only give any advantages in the size of the file, but even gives a loss in relation to the raster format.
