Think: Direct contradiction

what is irony?

  • Verbal Irony: When someone says the opposite of what they mean (sarcasm)
  • Situational Irony: When something happens that is the diametrical or direct opposition to what is expected
  • Dramatic Irony: When the audience knows something that the characters don't; this is used for emphasis (often emphasizing the mood - drama, tension, humor)

Irony in “The Lottery”

Ramble Write & Discuss

  1. What do you think of when you hear that someone has “won the lottery”?
  2. Given that image, why is the end of the story ironic?

(How does Tessie’s “prize” for winning the lottery contradict what we would expect?)

“That’s just how we've always done it.”

  • What dangers does this type of thinking pose?
  • Why do people follow it?
