The Communication Process

Challenges and Opportunities

We tend to take communication FOR GRANTED,

because it is a DAILY EXPERIENCE.

In communication one person attempts to convey a MESSAGE,

Sender

Receiver

from which another person tries to create meaning and UNDERSTANDING.

There are many factors in the process, however, that sharply influence
whether the message is understood the way it was intended or not.

Sender

Receiver

Motivation

Composition

Transmission

Reception

Interpretation

So there is a lot of room for misinterpretation in the communication process.

Language

Word Ambiguity

Health

Attitudes

Worldviews

Cultural Differences

PERCEPTION

SOURCES

Additionally, the message can be altered through PERCEPTION SOURCES, such as:

Motivation

Composition

Transmission

Reception

Interpretation

LANGUAGE: the use of jargon or speaking different natives languages.

WORD AMBIGUITY: words with different meanings depending on the context.

HEALTH: Physical and mental wellbeing.

ATTITUDES: Personality conflicts, lack of motivation or selective perception.

WORLDVIEWS: Differences in values, beliefs, goals, priorities, meanings, etc.

CULTURAL DIFFERENCES of verbal and non-verbal messages

can create entirely different interpretations.

In short: to reach mutual understanding can be a truly complex task.
And even more, when you consider INTERPERSONAL FACTORS, such as:

INTERPERSONAL

FACTORS

Communication Style

Relationship Level

Conflict Level

Emotional Intelligence

Behavior Interpretation

OUR CHALLENGE: The communication process is so rich and complex that

there is a high likelihood to misunderstand the intended meaning of a message.
