  • The Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) is a second generation (2G) standard for mobile networks.
  • GSM in the United States uses 2 different bands

          - GSM 850

              - Uplink:        824.0 - 849.0 MHz

              - Downlink:   869.0 - 894.0 MHz

          - GSM 1900

              - Uplink:        1850.2 – 1909.8 MHz

              - Downlink:   1930.2 – 1989.8 MHz

IMSI and TMSI

  • IMSI (International Mobile Subscriber Identity) is broadcasted when the cellphone first enters an area.
  • It is associated with the SIM card.
  • TMSI (Temporary Mobile Subscriber Identity) is broadcasted when the cellphone performs any activity in that area.
  • It is associated with the SIM in that AREA
