Music Video
I will be producing a HipHop and R&B Music Video as part of my A2 coursework. I decided on the genres HipHop and R&B as those as the genres I listen to the most, therefore making it an ideal choice as I am more familiar with them and am more aware of the stereotypical conventions. This knowledge allows me to construct my productions to the best of my ability. The song chosen is ‘Jealous’ by a young upcoming artist, Kehlani, who is best known for her hit single ‘The Way’ featuring Chance the Rapper which boosted her fame greatly. ‘Jealous’ also features another female artist, Lexii Alijai, whose verse I will use the same performer in my production. The song is quite upbeat but based on a failing relationship due to fame meaning my video will need to portray the variety of emotions the artist should be feeling. I plan to portray these emotions through the use of editing techniques and effects throughout. The video will be focussed on the artist herself as she expresses what she’s feeling and thinking to her audience, so the majority of the shots will be of the artist. I also plan to include a few outdoor shots as well as in-studio and home shots for variety but also to portray a journey of contemplation she is feeling as the situation essentially goes round her head. These shots will contrast each other as the outdoor shots will create more of a mellow mood whereas the indoor shots will apply more of a serious or feisty attitude to the mood, which will be done through experimenting with lighting and camera angles. In terms of equipment I will be using natural and artificial lighting for precision and clarity, using professional video cameras borrowed from either school or family members who specialise in filming. From looking at existing products, I learnt that mise-en-scene is also key to attract the audience as well as explain the narrative subtly. To do this, I will be frequently changing the look of the main artist to portray her attitude through her fashion, hairstyles and makeup looks. I will be using other HipHop and R&B artists’ styles to incorporate my main artist’s signature look. This should be successful.
