• Technological developments (like the atomic bomb)

• Devastating losses in war

• Shift in culture

Modernism

• Characterized by disillusionment

• People lost faith in cornerstones of society: religion, family, morality, hope, etc.

• People rejected everything that had traditionally defined our society

• Rather than getting better, this national depression actually got worse (see: Postmodernism)

• Consider: In LOTF, do we see the boys as more of a positive or negative commentary on humanity? Do they exist to give us hope, or to rob us of the hope we thought we could have?

Presentation Project

• You will deliver a 10-15 minute presentation to your peers, who will take notes
   

• You will be graded based on:
   

  • Quality of the slides

  • Quality of the presentation skills

  • Quality of the research

  • Quality of the insights you make

Presentation Project

• Once you have your group of 3 AND the topic cluster you want, let me know.

• I will cross out the topic cluster up here. Anything that is crossed out cannot be chosen by another group. (No duplicates.)

• You should then begin collecting research and sources in a Google Doc on the following:
   

  • What is it?

  • When was it relevant/when did it occur?

  • What additional context do we need to know about it?

  • How do the topics within the cluster relate to each other?

  • How does it relate to our unit’s text, Lord of the Flies?
