How to check an image for AI metadata

A short checklist for creators who publish AI-assisted images.

Where AI info hides

EXIF and XMP fields (software, prompt, parameters), IPTC digital source type, and C2PA Content Credentials manifests. PNGs from some generators also keep the prompt in text chunks.

How to look

Open the file in an EXIF/metadata viewer and check XMP, IPTC and any C2PA manifest. Note which fields mention AI generation, the tool, or the prompt.

Decide what to share

Platforms read these fields and may label an image. Remove only what you do not want to publish. see what AI info is stored in your image and how to remove it

It runs in the browser, and one image is free there.

Limits

Removing metadata does not remove pixel-level invisible watermarks and does not guarantee a platform will not label an image.
